Broken Family Relationships: What the Bible Says

The Bible treats family relationships as valuable, but it does not pretend they are always peaceful. Scripture recounts jealousy between siblings, conflict between parents and children, betrayal, favoritism, and estrangement. These stories show that brokenness can affect any family while also pointing toward truth, repentance, forgiveness, and wise boundaries.

Romans 12:18 offers a practical standard: “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” This recognizes that reconciliation requires more than one willing person. You can act with integrity without assuming full responsibility for another person’s choices.

Matthew 18:15 encourages addressing wrongdoing directly and privately when appropriate. Choose a calm time, describe the specific behavior without insults, and clearly state what needs to change. James 1:19 also advises believers to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.
