“Dog” and “cat” are starting points, not complete descriptions. Dogs vary in energy, training needs, and temperament; cats vary in activity and sociability. Small mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles also have distinct habitat, handling, and care requirements. A small animal is not automatically an easy one.
Research the particular species and, when possible, the individual animal. If you can meet a prospective pet, ask the shelter, rescue, breeder, or care provider what they know about its behavior and health history. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s pet-selection guidance is a useful starting point as you compare your household with an animal’s needs.
Before deciding, identify a veterinarian who cares for that type of animal. Also review current CDC guidance on healthy pets, especially if children will help with handling or habitat cleaning. Adults should supervise those tasks and make sure everyone understands appropriate hygiene. If someone in your home has allergies or concerns about close contact, address them before bringing a pet home.
