Best Free Room Layout Program: Sweet Home 3D

We recommend Sweet Home 3D as the best free program for creating a room layout because it lets you draw a floor plan, arrange furniture, and view your design in 3D. It is a practical choice when you want to test whether a sofa, bed, or dining table will fit before you move heavy furniture or buy anything new.

Measure the length and width of your room, then note the positions of doors, windows, radiators, and other features that could affect where furniture can go. Enter those dimensions into your plan and add furniture using measurements from your own pieces, so the layout reflects the space you actually have rather than an idealized version of it.

Try placing your largest piece first, then arrange smaller items around it while leaving enough room to open doors and drawers and walk comfortably through the space. Our team suggests making a few versions of the same plan: for example, you might compare a bed against the longest wall with one tucked into a corner, then choose the arrangement that best supports your daily routine.
