Why Your Dog Suddenly Avoids Her Crate at Night

If your dog used to enter her crate willingly but now hesitates at bedtime, start by looking for what changed rather than assuming she is being stubborn. A new noise outside, a shift in your evening routine, a different room temperature, or an unpleasant experience while crated can make the same space feel less comfortable at night.

Make sure the crate is large enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably, and inspect the bedding, door, and floor for anything that could hurt or startle her. If her reluctance appeared suddenly alongside limping, restlessness, frequent bathroom trips, vomiting, or other changes in behavior, contact your veterinarian; pain or illness can make settling in the crate difficult.
